One of the things that makes Rejuran at The Face different from many Christchurch clinics is that Georgia offers two delivery methods: traditional manual injection and the Dermashine automated mesotherapy device. Both methods deliver the same Rejuran polynucleotide product into the dermis but the experience, comfort level, and clinical application differ in meaningful ways.

This post breaks down exactly how each method works, what the research says, and how to decide which is right for you.

What is manual Rejuran injection?

Manual Rejuran injection is the traditional, clinically established method of delivering polynucleotides into the dermis. Using a fine needle, we place precise microinjections of Rejuran at controlled intervals and depths across the treatment area.

Rejuran injections deliver polynucleotides directly into the mid to deep dermis using fine needles, depositing the product precisely around fibroblasts and extracellular matrix structures, resulting in superior bioavailability and a stronger stimulation of collagen types I and III, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans.

Manual injection allows for the greatest level of precision and control, your injector will  adjust depth, volume, and placement point by point across the treatment area, concentrating the product in specific areas of concern with accuracy.

Best for:

  • Targeted treatment of specific concerns: acne scarring, deep lines, or under-eye hollowness
  • Areas requiring precise, focused placement
  • Clients prioritising maximum clinical efficacy over comfort

What is the Dermashine?

The Dermashine is an advanced automated mesotherapy injector that uses vacuum-assisted multi-needle technology to deliver Rejuran into the dermis. Rather than individual manual injection points, the Dermashine uses a multi-needle cartridge head to stamp the product evenly across the skin in a controlled, consistent pattern, covering larger areas more efficiently and with significantly more uniform distribution.

The vacuum technology draws the skin up slightly before needle penetration, which stabilises the skin surface and allows for more precise depth control than manual injection across large areas. Dermashine enables precise dosing and uniform injection through vacuum technology, inserting the needles at negative pressure to allow precise penetration while minimising product loss.

The key practical advantage is comfort. Because the Dermashine distributes the needle penetrations more evenly and uses finer needles than those typically used in manual injection, the treatment is significantly less painful for most clients.

Best for:

  • Full-face or neck treatments covering a large surface area
  • Clients who are sensitive to pain or anxious about injections
  • Maintaining and building on results from previous Rejuran sessions
  • Improving overall skin quality and texture rather than targeting a specific concern

What does the research say?

A 2025 split-face comparative study published in Cosmetics (MDPI) provides directly relevant evidence on needle versus device-based mesotherapy delivery (like a Dermashine).

The study involved 20 female participants aged 35 to 60 who received needle mesotherapy on one side of the face and microneedle device mesotherapy on the other, across four sessions. Needle injectors was perceived as more painful, with a pain score of 5.2 out of 10 compared to the device injectors rated at 3.1.

Importantly, 80% of participants showed greater firmness and skin tension on the side treated with the device, which correlated with instrumental analysis results and clinical observations. Both methods produced meaningful improvements in skin quality, the device method was simply more comfortable and showed marginally better firmness outcomes in this study.

For Rejuran delivery specifically, a separate clinical comparison found that manual injection therapy is clinically preferred for structural dermal pathologies and targeted treatment, while device-based delivery is more suited to superficial skin concerns and needle-averse patients.

This highlgihts the importance of a consultaiton with our injectors who are Registered Nurses.

Side by side comparison

Manual Injection

Delivery: Individual hand-placed microinjection

Depth control: Maximum precision, point by point

Coverage: Targeted, focused areas

Comfort: More uncomfortable

Best for: Acne scarring, deep lines, targeted areas

Session time: 30 to 45 minutes

Dermashine

Delivery: Automated multi-needle vacuum device

Depth control: Consistent, uniform across treatment area

Coverage: Efficient full-face or large area treatment

Comfort: Significantly more comfortable

Best for: Overall skin quality, maintenance, pain-sensitive clients

Session time: 30 to 45 minutes

Which should you choose?

If you're treating a specific concern with defined areas, acne scarring, under-eye hollowness, or localised lines, manual injection is likely the better clinical choice for maximum precision and product placement.

If you're focused on overall skin quality improvement, are treating a large area, are new to Rejuran and want to understand how your skin responds, or are simply more sensitive to pain, Dermashine is a genuinely effective and significantly more comfortable option.

If you're unsure, we will assess your skin and goals at your consultation and give you an honest recommendation.
